new sailors learning from their teachers
The mission of the Presque Isle Discovery Center is: to deliver educational, cultural and recreational programs within a framework of regional partnerships, to develop the Presque Isle area as a desirable, interesting place to live and an exciting vacation and "up North' destination, and to offer geo-tourism activities and educational opportunities related to the outdoors, regional culture and the environment.

Program Information

For 2010, the coop is not offering programming with activities for kids and adults. We are understanding that there will be swimming lessons offered free of charge at the Presque Isle Harbor Association.

Sailing Classes at Grand Lake

The Alpena Sailing club will be offering a sailing week in Presque Isle from August 1 – 5. Individuals can sign up using the Registration Form.

NOAA Sponsored Wreck Snorkeling

The following information is from the Thunder Bay Marine Sanctuary

We have decided on our availability dates for the DPIC Snorkels being presented by the sanctuary. I am extremely sorry for the delay but our schedule is filling up and we were trying to avoid double-booking events and this took a little time as more activities came in. Our dates are as follows:

  1. July 22- Schooner Portland (Meet at Besser Natural Area Parking)
  2. July 23- Sidewheel Steamer Albany (Meet at Presque Isle Cemetary
  3. August 12- Steamer Joseph S. Fay (Meet at 40-mile Point Lighthouse)
  4. August 13- North Bay Wreck (Meet at Presque Isle Beach Association)

Let’s schedule all snorkels for 1:30pm departures at the put-in location listed above for each wreck site. We will offer to outfit participants with our donor gear but please make them aware we have a limited number of sizes available and only for adults. If they want to be certain of having equipment in their sizes they should speak to Thunder Bay Scuba in Alpena or Great Lakes Divers in Rogers City or stop by the sanctuary to try on one of our suits before their scheduled snorkeling tour date. Children should wear a wetsuit as well but participants will need to rent or supply their own for children as we do not have any suits in this size.

I also wanted to make you all aware of a new business owner named Kevin Karpinski. He is starting up a “glass-bottom” kayak tour business and he may be interested in offering tours as part of the programming. He is doing tours of two of the shipwrecks listed above in the kayaks and it’s a great opportunity for folks to view these shipwrecks without even getting wet. If the group would like to take the opportunity to contact him, his e-mail is mtn.biker@att.net . His website is http://www.greenplanetextreme.com/ if you would like to learn more about his business. Please let me know if there is anything else we can do from this end to help promote the cooperative or to clarify logistics for these guided snorkels. Again, I apologize for the delay in sending these dates on to the group. Thanks for your time everyone, the summer is in full swing now so it’s time we get outside and enjoy everything this beautiful area has to offer!
